An e-bike without pedals has landed a New Tecumseth man in trouble with police.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say at around 7 p.m. on Oct. 3, officers spotted a person riding an e-bike on a sidewalk on Young Street in Alliston.
They say the rider drove onto the road, crossed multiple lanes of traffic, and rode into a commercial plaza parking lot.
Police say officers discovered the bike no longer had pedals attached and was being powered solely by its electric motor.
That meant, under the Highway Traffic Act, it met the definition of a motor vehicle.
Police say the man could not provide a driver's licence, vehicle permit or proof of insurance.
They allege he gave officers a false name and refused to identify himself before being arrested.
The 47-year-old was charged with five counts of operating while prohibited under the Criminal Code, two counts of failing to comply with a release order, and one count each of obstructing a peace officer, driving while under suspension, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, driving a motor vehicle with no permit, no plates, no vehicle identification number, and driving without a proper headlight.
The accused was released with a future court date.
The vehicle was impounded for 45 days.
