OPP urging care, common sense and courtesy this holiday weekend

Careful as you go

Call it a kickstart to the summer season this weekend – a holiday weekend. An influx of people…and traffic…is expected in the region as cottagers and campers head this way for the first time.

“This long weekend, we can all contribute to the safety on our roads, trails and waterways by never operating a motor vehicle or boat while impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. Our personal and public safety relies on each and every one of us obeying the speed limit, driving in accordance with weather, road and trail conditions, and ensuring the use of helmets when riding a motorcycle and/or ATV and a lifejacket while boating.”

— Thomas Carrique, Commissioner, Ontario Provincial Police

OPP note 22 of the 24 people who died on the water in OPP jurisdictions last year were not wearing life jackets, that half of those killed in off-road incidents were not wearing a helmet, and speed, alcohol and no helmets were factors in many of the motorcycle deaths.

Enjoy yourself, but please do it carefully – safely.
