Orillia OPP officer charged with assault following SIU probe

SIU says a woman suffered a serious injury while in a cell

An Orillia Ontario Provincial Police officer has been charged with assault causing bodily harm following a probe by the Special Investigations Unit.

The SIU says the charge against the officer relates to an interaction with a 43-year-old woman in Sept. 2019. The matter was brought to the attention of the SIU by a civilian in Apr. 2020.

The SIU says that on Sept. 7, 2019, provincial police arrested a woman outside Studabakers Beachside in Orillia and transported her to the Orillia OPP detachment. While in a cell, the SIU says the woman became involved in an interaction with a police officer and she was taken to hospital for treatment. Two days later, the woman returned to hospital and was diagnosed with a serious injury.

The officer has a court date next month.
