Orillia OPP respond to multiple weapons calls, charge four

OPP upgrade charges after driver dies of injuries in Highway 12 crash near Gambridge

Orillia OPP responded to three separate weapons calls, which led to four people being charged.

On Tuesday just after 11:00 a.m., Orillia OPP responded to reports of a man walking on Barrie Road near Memorial Avenue in Orillia with a firearm in his waistband.

"Officers attended the area and located a male matching the description," OPP said in a release. "He was with another male party. Officers observed what they believed to be a firearm. Officers placed both parties under arrest and continued the investigation. It was later found that a flare gun was altered to operate as a legitimate firearm."

A 35-year-old from Orillia was charged with:

  • Carrying concealed weapon contrary to section 90 CC
  • Possession of Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose contrary to section 88 CC
  • Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of Firearm contrary to section 92(1) CC
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance- Cocaine contrary to section 4(1) of the Controlled Drug and Substance Act

While a 24-year-old from Orillia faces the following:

  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 contrary to section 354(1)(a)
  • Possession of a Schedule 1 Substance- Cocaine contrary to section 4 (1) CDSA

Both were held in custody for a bail hearing.

Later, around 4:00 p.m., officers received reports of a man with a chainsaw on Mount Saint Louis Road, near Teanaustaye Drive in Oro-Medonte.

"The information received was the male party was using the chainsaw to cause damage to his motor vehicle and a nearby residence," OPP say. "Officers attended and were able to successfully gain control and arrest the male party."

A 40-year-old Cedar Point man is up on:

  • Break and enter a place - with intent to commit indictable offence contrary to section 348(1)(a) CC
  • Mischief over $5000 contrary to section 430(3) CC
  • Mischief over $5000 contrary to section 430(3) CC
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose contrary to section 88 CC

He was released on an undertaking with a future court date.

Then in the evening, just before 8:00 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call in the area of Line 14 in Oro-Medonte.

OPP arrived and spoke with the man who had called 911.

"After officers spoke with the male, and were going to leave the area, a female's voice could be heard yelling out for the officer's assistance as the male party was in possession of a firearm and was pointing it at the officers," police stated. "Officers were able to gain control of the male and successfully place him under arrest."

A 24-year-old Oro-Medonte man has been charged with:

  • Assault a Peace Officer with a weapon contrary to section 270.01(1)(a) of the CC
  • Assault a Peace Officer with a weapon contrary to section 270.01(1)(a) of the CC
  • Fail to Comply with probation Order contrary to section 733.1(1) CC
  • Pointing a Firearm CC 87
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order contrary to section 117.01(1)
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order contrary to section 117.01(1)
  • Possession of Firearm or Ammunition contrary to Prohibition Order contrary to section 117.01(1)
  • Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose contrary to section 88 CC
  • Resist Peace Officer contrary to section 129 (a) CC
  • Resist Peace Officer contrary to section 129 (a) CC
  • Uttering Threats-cause death or Bodily Harm contrary to section 264.1(1)(a)

The accused was held in custody for a bail hearing.
