Orillia Pushes Pause Button on Construction Projects as the Snow Starts To Blow

Finishing Touches on Front St., West St. Expected in the Spring

They say there are only two seasons in Canada: winter and construction. Now that one is here, the other has to end.

The City of Orillia says some major road projects are wrapping up for the winter, including the Front Street reconstruction and the widening of West Ridge Boulevard. Final touches are expected to come in the Spring of 2020.

“It was a busy road construction season in Orillia and I would like to thank residents and business owners in the construction areas for their patience and understanding as we completed necessary work on two major roadways on either end of the city,” said Mayor Steve Clarke. “Although there are some finishing touches to be completed in the spring, these two projects will facilitate future development and improve the traffic flow of our growing city.”

The City of Orillia provided the following information on what’s completed and how much work is left on both projects:

Front Street reconstruction project Phase 1

The majority of the Front Street reconstruction project Phase 1 has been completed.

Completed works include:

  • Installation of water, sanitary sewer, and stormwater sewer infrastructure;
  • Completion of road surface, including concrete curbs, sidewalks, and entrances;
  • Asphalt driveway entrances;
  • The temporary multi-use trail between King Street and Elgin Street;
  • Installation of street light and traffic signal bases complete with pertinent works;
  • Placement of temporary aggregate material in the spaces where patterned decorative concrete is planned within the boulevard. This will ensure that the area is safe for pedestrians and winter control operations.

JB Enterprises Ltd. is scheduled to continue and complete the following items throughout December:

  • Installation of streetlights and traffic signals, including the removal of existing traffic signals and associated concrete bases;
  • Installation of regulatory traffic signs, and pavement markings.

The following items will be completed as weather permits in spring 2020:

  • Placement of nursery sod;
  • Planting of street boulevard trees and planters complete with accompanying plants;
  • Removal of the temporary aggregate material placed in the fall of 2019;
  • Installation of the boulevard patterned decorative concrete;
  • Final application of pavement markings as required.

West Ridge Boulevard widening

The majority of the West Ridge Boulevard Widening from Bass Lake Sideroad East to Hunter Valley Road has been completed.

Completed works include:

  • Removal of open ditch(s) and installation of urban stormwater sewer infrastructure;
  • Completion of the road base, including concrete curbs;
  • Installation of base asphalt on the northbound and southbound lanes;
  • Installation traffic signal bases complete with pertinent works.

Georgian Paving Ltd. is scheduled to continue and complete the following items throughout December:

  • Installation of traffic signals, including the removal of existing traffic signals and associated concrete bases;
  • Installation of regulatory traffic signs.

The following items will be completed as weather permits in spring 2020:

  • Placement of nursery sod;
  • Placement of top lift of asphalt for all five lanes, complete with pavement markings.
