More than two months after a deadly collision involving a tractor trailer and a horse and buggy in northern Ontario, provincial police have charged a trucker from Orillia and a Dufferin County-based company.

East Algoma OPP say the collision happened on Dec. 4, 2023 as both the transport truck and buggy were eastbound on Highway 17 in the municipality of Huron Shores.

"The 29-year-old buggy operator sustained extensive injuries and was transported by Algoma Paramedic Services. He later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased," police said in a media release.

The truck driver, a 56-year-old man, has been charged with numerous offences such as driving while under suspension, careless driving, 15 counts of failing to maintain a daily log, operating an unsafe motor vehicle, as well as other vehicle and safety infractions.

Hunt Trucking Limited of Mulmur has been charged by police with 36 offences including 15 counts of permitting a person to drive a commercial vehicle not in accordance with the regulations, 16 counts of failing to monitor a driver's compliance and more.

Both the driver and the company have court dates in Sault Ste. Marie in April.
