Orillia YMCA Pool Closed After Ceiling Panel Falls

"at a different time this could have been a potentially serious accident."

The Orillia YMCA pool could be out of commission for a good four weeks.

One of the 200+ acoustic panels hanging above the pool at the Y fell from the ceiling last Saturday, and right into the pool. “Fortunately it was before the facility opened and no one was injured,” General Manager Gilda Evely told Barrie 360, “but at a different time this could have been a potentially serious accident.”

For safety’s sake, and as it is unknown if more panels could fall, the decision was made to remove all of them. Evely says the job could take up to four weeks. “The scaffolding alone needed to do this work will take about 4 days to erect and an additional 4 days to dismantle once the panels are removed.” she added, “We will then need to refill and heat the pool.”

Evely says the YMCA is aware this has been disruptive for its members, as well as outside groups that use the pool, including the Channel Cats swim club, and local schools. Evely points out that YMCA memberships are transferable, and many Orillia members are using other Y pools in areas like Gravenhurst, Barrie, and Midland.
