Outrage as thousands jam downtown Toronto park, ignoring physical distancing bylaws

Toronto Mayor John Tory said he was disappointed, noted there was compliance at many other parks

Ticked off, p/oed and even more graphic language lit up social media to describe the scene at Trinity Bellwoods Park in downtown Toronto on Saturday where thousands of people jammed the lawn to soak up the sun, with no respect for physical distancing bylaws.

Mayor John Tory said he was disappointed by what he saw and promised more police and bylaw officers at the park today, which may be a mute point since rain is in the forecast.

Tory said he wouldn't hesitate to close the park if crowds continued to gather. He said he heard that at other parks in Toronto people were in compliance.

Toronto city councillor Joe Cressy called the behaviour at Trinity Bellwoods selfish.

"You're putting yourself, your parents, and your friends at risk, so grow up."

Dr. Eileen de Villa, Toronto’s medical officer of health, warned that this “selfish” and “dangerous” behaviour can set the city back.
