Groundhog Day is around the corner, and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is asking to do away with the tradition of using actual groundhogs.
They are calling for Pennsylvania to retire the famous Groundhog Punxsutawney Phil and replace him with a giant gold coin to predict the weather instead.
PETS says that since Phil is only right about the weather 39% of the time, they would be better off with a coin flip.
Wow, first, they want to replace him, and now they are insulting his work performance.
In a statement, PETA said, "Beyond a shadow of a doubt, a groundhog's weather prediction is no more accurate than flipping a coin. He is not a meteorologist and deserves better than being exploited yearly for tourism money."
The group also called out Sun Prairie, Wisconsin – which uses its own Jimmy the Groundhog.
They've distributed advertisements around the city saying, "I'm ME, not a meteorologist," and "It's time to chuck this tired old tradition.
