How Pink Shirt Day Started
Pink Shirt Day started in 2007 after a student in Nova Scotia was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. Two students saw the bullying and decided to take a stand. They bought dozens of pink shirts and the next day, they and their classmates showed up wearing the colour. Word got out and soon even more people were joining the call.
About Shak’s World Community Centre
Shak’s World Community Centre (SWCC) uses basketball, innovation, and mentorship as a bridge to youth employment, education, and training. By creating a positive, inclusive and diverse environment, SWCC tackles the underlying issues leading to:
- Youth addiction
- Homelessness
- Mental health challenges
Their youth-led urban community development project is run by youth programming leads who are all 29 years old or younger. Through mentorship, sport, and community engagement, SWCC encourages a positive and stable environment for youth to take steps in defining and implementing direction in their lives.
SWCC welcomes youth from across Simcoe County between the ages of 7 and 17 to participate in a wide variety of drop-in programming like art, dance, yoga, chess, and 6-12-week basketball training programs.
Shak’s World is an amazing local organization and we really can’t think of a better way to support them.
