When you visit Robinson Home Hardware, and you're not just entering a store; you're stepping into a piece of Barrie's history. Since 1923, the Robinson family has been a cornerstone of the community, providing exceptional service, a vast selection of hardware, and unwavering support for their neighbors.
A family legacy built on service
The story of Robinson Home Hardware begins with Charlie Robinson, a young farmer with a vision. In 1923, he moved here from Cookstown, seeing a need for a hardware store to serve the growing population of Barrie. This dedication to service became the cornerstone of the business.
Over three generations, the Robinson family has nurtured a culture of friendly and knowledgeable staff who are always ready to lend a helping hand. Whether you're a seasoned professional tackling a kitchen renovation, a first-time homeowner tackling their garden landscape, or a boating enthusiast looking for marine supplies, Robinson's staff (some of which have been with the store for over 40 years) will guide you with expertise and a smile.
Evolution and expansion
Robinson Hardware has always been a business that adapts to the changing needs of Barrie. Originally located downtown at the corner of Maple and Dunlop Street, the store primarily served farmers. In 1930, the business moved to 31 Dunlop Street where it stayed until 1998.
As the business grew, so did their selections and soon, Robinson's was “the store with a million items!” It was a one-stop shop for everything from clothing to hardware.
Eventually the downtown landscape shifted and Jim and John, who are third generation Robinsons, recognized the need to better serve the growing east end of the city. In 1998, they made a strategic move to their current location on Penetanguishene Road. While the space may be smaller, Robinson's has ensured their shelves are still stocked with a comprehensive selection of hardware to meet the needs of their loyal customers.
In 2009, Robinson Hardware became part of Home Hardware, a 100% Canadian Dealer-owned retailer.
Beyond the shelves: A commitment to community
The Robinson family believes their success is deeply intertwined with the success of the community they serve. For over a century, they've not only supported tradespeople and homeowners, they’ve been involved in numerous charitable initiatives, giving back to the very people who have supported them.
Their contributions have ranged from donations to RVH, Hospice Simcoe, the Rotary Club, the Royal Canadian Legion, and the Food Bank, to sponsoring local youth sports teams through the Barrie Soccer Club. These efforts demonstrate the Robinson family's deep commitment to nurturing the next generation of Barrie residents and fostering a vibrant community spirit.
A look to the future
As Robinson Home Hardware celebrates its 100th year, the fourth generation of Robinsons is already involved in the business. Jim's daughter, Kate, has been a familiar face at the store for over two decades, and her husband, Marcus, has joined the team, bringing a keen interest to the marine department. This dedication to family and community ensures that Robinson Home Hardware will continue to be a vital part of Barrie for years to come.
Robinson Home Hardware is more than just a store; it's a testament to the enduring spirit of a family business and their commitment to the community they call home.
