The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says it is investigating the death of a 28-year-old woman who was arrested by Barrie police on Thursday night.

According to a news release from the SIU on Saturday, the woman was arrested in the area of 49 Coulter Street for outstanding warrants, and was taken to the police station and held in a cell.

The following night, on Friday, May 17, the woman was transported by Ontario Provincial Police special constables from the Barrie Police station to the Central North Correction Centre in Penetanguishene.

The woman was found unresponsive in the vehicle and transported to the hospital in Midland. The woman was pronounced dead on Saturday in hospital, the SIU stated in its news release.

Two investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for May 20.

The SIU investigates allegations of sexual assault and police interactions that result in serious injury and/or death.
