Premier AWOL from the legislature, under fire over plan to hold $1,000 PC fundraiser

Doug Ford has missing two days of question period at Queen's Park this week

As the province battles a third wave of COVID-19 with record numbers of people hospitalized with the virus, Premier Doug Ford is under fire for plans to hold a $1,000 Zoom fundraiser for the Ontario wing of the Progressive Conservative party on Thursday.

Liberal MPP John Fraser made mention of the fundraiser in the legislature on Tuesday as he questioned how Ford could hold such an event in light of a third wave of COVID-19 in Ontario.

“We’re in a crisis in Ontario,” Fraser said. “While ICU admissions continue to rise, the Premier’s priority this Thursday night is a $1,000-a-ticket fundraiser in the middle of a third wave. What planet is that okay on?”

The Zoom event is advertised on the Ontario Progressive Conservative party website.

Ford has skipped two sittings of the legislature this week following last Friday’s announcement that stay-at-home orders were being tightened. The next day amid a public backlash, the premier backed away from playground closures and giving police enhanced powers to stop people at random and ask why they are not at home and where they live.
