An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

A Barrie homeowner took that advice under advisement, it would appear, and it may have prevented the theft of their pickup truck.

Around three this morning, police say three people approached a truck parked in a driveway in the area of Essa Road and Athabaska Road. One of the individuals went up to the front door and was holding a "crude, circular antenna-looking device" that was attached to cables going to a small device they held.

"He remained at the door for close to 30 seconds, but left when his device was unable to capture the key fob signal," police said in a news release.

The incident was captured on video surveillance, and the only suspect description was that the male who stood by the front door was wearing a ski mask, a hooded long-sleeve shirt or sweater, and pants.

Police believe the theft was likely prevented as the homeowner had secured their key fobs in a nearby closet in a Faraday box, which prevented the key fob signal from being intercepted.

The investigating officer provided the homeowners with additional tips to hopefully prevent any possible future auto theft, which included adding a tagging system, an ignition kill switch, and a steering wheel locking device.

Free Faraday bags are available at the front desk of Barrie Police Headquarters. The public can attend and obtain one with proof of residency in Barrie, such as a driver's license or tax bill.
