A local animal sanctuary is seeking volunteers to assist with a much-needed project.

Ralphy's Retreat Animal Sanctuary in Wyevale, Ontario, is home to over 112 animals in need, including potbellied pigs, horses, sheep, cows, and alpacas.

Manager Shannon Leguizamon says they are in the process of retrofitting one of their barns to create an animal hospice, allowing their animals to pass away with dignity.

She explains, "Approximately 60% of our animals have either special needs or are seniors, and we found, especially last year, that the winter and these hot summers are particularly hard on our animals, especially those with special needs."

They plan to make the barn a sanitary location and add air conditioning and heat.

The sanctuary has been able to save money for the project, but still needs people with hands-on skills to bring the building to fruition.

Leguizamon says they need help with electrical work, spray foam insulation, and framing.

With the weather changing quickly and winter not far off, they hope to complete the project as soon as possible.

In addition to needing hands-on help, Leguizamon says they accept donations of apples and leftover, paint-free pumpkins for the animals.

She adds, "It's a great cause. These animals absolutely deserve this, and if you can come out and support us in any way, by spreading the word, making a financial donation, or donating supplies, it would be greatly appreciated."
