Rama First Nation - state of emergency

In light of the ongoing severe ice storm affecting our region, Rama First Nation is declaring a State of Emergency under the authority of Chief and Council. This decision has been made following consultations with the Rama First Nation Emergency Control Group, after considering the escalating impacts of the storm, which has caused significant damage to infrastructure, power outages, hazardous road conditions, flooded basements, and downed trees and power lines.

While we expect conditions to improve overnight, the ice storm continues to create dangerous conditions throughout Rama First Nation, and the power outage persists. Crews are actively working to clear debris, restore hydro, and address the damage, but additional time and safety measures are needed.

Barrie Mayor Talked To Us About The Storm

This declaration allows Rama First Nation to access the necessary resources and streamline emergency response efforts to protect the health and safety of our community members. We are urging all members of Rama First Nation to stay home and stay safe. Please avoid non-essential travel and stay up-to-date with official communications from Rama First Nation. The storm has caused significant disruption, and road conditions remain hazardous due to fallen trees, power lines, and other debris. We ask for your cooperation to allow emergency response crews and hydro workers to carry out their essential work safely and efficiently.

Emergency Response Efforts

  • Emergency crews are working around the clock to clear roads, respond to fallen trees, and address
    other hazardous conditions.
  • Public safety services, including fire, police, and paramedics, remain fully operational and are
    available for emergency calls.
  • Hydro One crews are actively working to restore power, but due to the extent of the damage, this
process may take several days. We are working closely with hydro services to prioritize the most
    urgent areas.
  • Community Members can visit the MASK to stay warm or charge essential devices. Should hydro
not be restored, the MASK will be open beyond regular hours as a designated emergency shelter.
  • Rama Shell, Rama Country Market and Rama MASK remain open, but all other Rama owned
facilities remain closed at this time.
  • Due to unsafe road conditions, non-essential travel is strongly discouraged.
  • There are multiple road closures in effect due to fallen trees and downed power lines
