Local Couple Experiences Rare Eagle Encounter

Early Bird Gets The Pike

During a day of ice fishing at their favourite spot on a lake in Seguin, Ontario, one local couple got a surprise they will never forget.

Anna and Vlad were enjoying what was typically a normal day for them, when they were unexpectedly joined by a bald eagle. The bird touched down right beside them to snack on a pike they had reeled in.

The couple were absolutely captivated to see such a rare siting as the eagle landed and hung around for over an hour to enjoy its meal.

Anna said: “It was a surreal experience that the both of us will never forget. To share this space with one of the world’s most majestic creatures, was truly an honor and a privilege to the likes of which we’ve never seen or will again.”

Since the bird is commonly known as the “American Bald Eagle”, many were surprised to see the creature in our neck of the woods. Bald eagles can actually be found all over North America.

Typically in Ontario, they nest throughout the north but after an intensive re-introduction program and environmental clean-up effort, the species has rebounded and can once again be seen in the southern Ontario range.

Although this couple was very fortunate to be in the right place at the right time, Anna advises the general public to wait for the ice to thicken up before venturing out onto it.

Not your average day in Seguin, Ontario.

“We are avid anglers, have ice fished for many years and came prepared with survival suits, ice picks, whistles, throw ropes, change of clothes, GPS and a spud bar. We were careful to check every step with a heavy steel spud bar and took every other safety precaution we could.”
