The number of families helped by Barrie & District Christmas Cheer (BDCC) is the largest in its 50-year history.

In a news release, the organization said 1,950 families in Barrie, Innisfil, Oro-Medonte, Springwater, and Angus are relying on BDCC as financial pressures of inflation are making it harder than ever for many to afford Christmas essentials.

The fundraising goal is $450,000, but the charity is saddled with a $298,000 shortfall, and hamper distribution to families begins next week.

“This year’s record demand reflects the challenges many families are facing in our community,” said Sandra Yaquo, President of Barrie & District Christmas Cheer.  “We urgently need the help of the community to ensure no one is left behind this Christmas.”

Terry Fox Elementary School in Barrie got behind the campaign and raised over 1,800 items for BDCC. Over the last 21 days, the school has collected food, toys, and other needed items. Donations come from students and their families, and staff at the school.

Principal Christie Arthurs said students from grades 7 and 8 volunteered to become "Christmas Cheer Ambassadors." They promoted the cause to the school community, collected classroom donations, and sorted and packed the items. This year, the school collected more donations than any year in recent memory.

"I am extremely proud of our school community. We always come together to demonstrate compassion and kindness in times of need," said Arthurs.

Representatives from BDCC collected the donations on Thursday.

Along with monetary donations, BDCC is asking for new, unwrapped toys for boys and girls aged 7 to 10. This age group can be tough to shop for, but organizers suggest the following items:

  • Lego
  • Action Figures/Dolls
  • Craft Kits
  • Board Games
