Record Number Of People Displaced From Their Homes Last Year – United Nations

War, persecution and other violence to blame

Another two million people worldwide were displaced from their homes last year by war, persecution and other violence

A United Nations report puts the number at a record 71-million – 41 million were displaced within their home countries. In Syria, where war has raged for eight years, 13-million people have been forcibly displaced.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees sending a message to U.S. President Trump and other world leaders saying it’s damaging to depict migrants and refugees as threats to jobs and security in host countries. Filippo Grandi noted they are often fleeing insecurity and danger themselves.

The UNHCR report noted that, by far, most refugees are taken in in the developing world, not wealthy countries.
