Residents and businesses urged to register their security cameras

Residents and businesses urged to register their security cameras

The South Simcoe Police Service is again calling on the public and local businesses to join forces with them in promoting community safety by registering with their Security Camera Registry. This initiative was launched in September 2021 to assist officers in quickly identifying the location of security cameras that could be used in investigations.

As more people install security cameras to deter crime in their neighbourhoods, the Camera Registry has become an important tool in crime prevention. This voluntary and free program only requires residents and businesses to complete a short registration form to identify the location of their external-facing cameras. In the event of an incident in the area, the police may reach out to registered camera owners to ask if their footage can be used to assist in the investigation.

It is worth noting police never have access to your camera equipment or feed, and camera owners can decline to participate when contacted. However, the footage captured by security cameras has been vital in solving criminal cases and finding missing persons both within the community and across Ontario.

By registering your camera, you can be part of a community-based crime prevention and crime-fighting initiative. If you are interested in registering your cameras, simply click on the following link and follow the prompts at https://southsimcoepolice.on.ca/security-camera-registry/.
