First responders rescued three people after the all-terrain vehicle (ATV) they were riding on Lake Simcoe went through the ice.

Around 2:15 Tuesday afternoon, Orillia OPP say officers responded to the waterfront between Beaverton and Brechin following a 911 call from the occupants of the ATV who reported their vehicle had gone through the ice and they were a "significant distance from shore."

An OPP plane located the three individuals through GPS coordinates and Rama Fire attended with an airboat and brought them safely to shore.

Constable Brett Boniface told Barrie 360 that the ATV floated so the trio weren't directly in the icy water.

"Police would like to remind everyone that no ice is safe ice. Please be aware of the conditions prior to heading out on the ice. Consult with local experts in the area and check for up to date reports on ice thickness," police said in a news release on Wednesday. "Also be aware of your location and surroundings as conditions can change quickly. Should you require emergency support, please know your location, as this assists first responders with rendering assistance in a timely manner."
