Rescuers call off search on Shannon Bay after finding no signs of anyone in distress

Area police and fire combed the surface of the bay on Lake Simcoe Thursday morning

First responders rushed to the icy shore off Shannon Bay Thursday morning, after reports someone possibly went through the ice.

The OPP helicopter took to the sky while Ramara and Oro Medonte Fire Services sent airboats onto the ice surface to aid in the search. Orillia Fire personnel scoured the bay for signs of someone in danger.

After a thorough search turned up no signs of anyone in distress, the effort was called off. The OPP report there were no fresh holes in the ice and a clear view to the bottom of the bay showed no one in danger.

Police and fire services remind you that no ice is safe ice and that the weather has not been cold enough to form a stable surface on many bodies of water in the region.
