German police are investigating an unusual case involving a robot accused of sexually harassing a 16-year-old girl, raising questions about who was directing its actions and whether they were controlled remotely.
Authorities in Cologne say the incident happened overnight between Saturday and Sunday, leading officers to seize the robot along with mobile phones belonging to two young men who are now considered suspects.
Police examining how robot was operated
According to police, the robot allegedly touched the girl's buttocks and made thrusting movements toward her.
Investigators are looking into whether the robot's actions were programmed in advance or directed in real time by a suspected 16-year-old owner and a 19-year-old companion.
Police say the two young men have not been charged.
The pair are also alleged to have filmed the incident, streamed it online and provided commentary during the broadcast.
For investigators, the case presents a challenge unlike any they have encountered before.
"We have not been aware of this phenomenon so far," Cologne police spokesperson Christoph Bermel told The Associated Press, adding it was "new territory for us."
Robot seized from vehicle
Police said emergency crews responding near a fast-food restaurant located the robot in the trunk of a vehicle.
The machine and the suspects' mobile phones were confiscated as part of the investigation.
Images released by Cologne police show a red-and-gold robot lying on the ground after being seized.
Officials said the robot stands about 120 centimetres tall, roughly three feet 11 inches. It was reportedly dressed in a white tank top and black sweatpants, and was wearing a gold chain, sunglasses and what appeared to be a fake moustache.
Videos circulated online
Videos shared online appear to show two young men accompanying the robot through a busy nightlife area.
In the footage, the robot approaches a group of women, bumps into one person and hugs others.
One of the young men can be heard repeatedly shouting at the robot and pulling it backward after it makes sexual gestures, drawing laughter from some bystanders.
Police warn against making light of incident
As discussion of the case spread online, Cologne police used their Facebook account to criticize inappropriate reactions to the incident.
Officers warned that sharing jokes or treating allegations such as these as entertainment can increase the impact on those affected.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine who, if anyone, was responsible for controlling the robot during the alleged assault.
