Rod Stewart says his previous marriages didn't last long enough to see his significant others go through menopause until now.

His third wife, Penny Lancaster, who he's been with since 2007 is the first wife he's seen go through the often-frustrating experience.

His relationship with his first wife Alana Stewart, ended when she was 39, and his second wife, Rachel Hunter, was 37 when they broke up.

Lancaster, who is 51, has been an active voice promoting education around menopause, including introducing a menopause mandate.

Its four main goals are to

1: Educate people about it
2: Stop scaremongering around Hormone Replacement Therapy(HRT)
3: Ensure the right medication is prescribed to people going through menopause,
4: Make menopause medication affordable.

In an interview with Readers Digest, Stewart said he started educating himself when she was going through her symptoms.

"I googled menopause so much when she was going through it; she was in a fragile situation; I just had to listen and learn and prepare for saucepans being thrown through the kitchen."

He says he started to worry when she would have sudden changes in attitude, explaining, "She would get into blinding fits of rage. One night she threw utensils, so me and the boys gave her a hug – and since then she has worked to let people know what it is."

He added, "Men have to understand and not just go down to the pub."

Penny Lancaster has spoken openly about her struggles. Watch the clip below as she explains how it's affected her.
