RVH By the Numbers: comparing a year of COVID to the year before

Fewer hospital visits, fewer trips to the ER

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) in Barrie saw a decline in non-COVID patients this year compared to last, as well as a dip in the number of emergency room visits.

On Wednesday, RVH released a “By-the-Numbers” look at the past year, and say there nearly 473,000 patient visits during its fiscal year in 2020-2021. That is about 14,000 fewer patients as compared to the year previous, at over 487,000. The number of emergency room visits, at 72,410, is over 12,000 fewer patients than in 2019-2020.

RVH says it saw 1,969 births over the past year, roughly the same as the year before. There was an increase in the number of cancer centre visits year-over-year.

However, the hospital reports it saw 520 COVID-19 patients this year, as well as 220 additional patients accepted from the GTA. It performed 114,314 COVID-19 tests and 87,400 vaccinations. There were 78 COVID-19-related deaths reported at the hospital in the last year.
