Severn Township car theft suspect linked to over a dozen other crimes

Man taken into custody after lengthy police dog track through the woods

A Wasaga Beach man is facing over two dozen criminal charges after a lengthy crime spree came to a head near Orillia.

The OPP were contacted on July 6 by a Severn Township resident who reported his car was stolen overnight. A friend of the victim reported seeing it in the Orillia area around 11 a.m. that day. Police tracked the vehicle to a business parking lot in the city and spotted what they describe as a suspicious male nearby.

Police say the man fled into a nearby wooded area, leading to a track through the forest by the OPP’s canine unit. The suspect was taken into custody near Fairgrounds Road in Severn.

After the suspect’s arrest, officers received information from other police services of incidences to which the suspect was linked; the OPP say a 31-year-old man is now facing five counts of break-and-enter, six of theft, nine charges of violating parole, and five of possession of stolen property, just to name a few.

The accused was held in police custody for a first court appearance on Thursday.
