The hatred over the word is called "Hey Hanging" because it typically follows a sentence with the listener waiting in anticipation.

"Hey, did you hear about about Joe from accounting?"
For some people, the seemingly innocent word causes a wave of emotions, and their minds go to a dark place.
The worst is when the word comes in emails, DM's and texts.
No one wants to see "Hey" followed by a ……..(typing)
Before the message's gist gets to you, you're already thinking you're about to be fired.
But why? It's because the brain needs to know what will happen for survival.
Psychologist Bryan Robinson told the Wall Street Journal that the word can trigger a fight-or-flight response where "Our minds go, 'I'm in hot water.'"
The issue even has a website dedicated to it, nohello.net, which encourages ditching the greeting in a message or e-mail.
As it says," Imagine calling someone on the phone, going hello! then putting them on hold… 🤦♀️
