The City of Barrie remains under a Significant Weather Event as crews work to restore winter maintenance standards across the city. Crews are conducting snow removal and snow lifts on roads that have become narrowed due to the volume of snowfall. The Significant Weather Event cannot be lifted until all narrowed roads have been addressed.
Winter maintenance operations are also being impacted by a province-wide road salt shortage. Crews are carefully managing and prioritizing available materials while continuing to maintain safe road conditions.
The City follows a Salt Optimization Strategy and Winter Operations Plan that prioritizes plowing to remove snow and ice before applying salt. During the shortage, crews assess road conditions, weather forecasts, and available supplies to determine the most appropriate treatment, including the use of salt or sand/salt mixtures on priority and secondary routes. Residential streets will continue to be serviced using a sand/salt mixture to provide traction.
The City thanks residents for their continued patience as crews work to complete the cleanup.
