The County of Simcoe announced it has topped housing targets, set out in the 10-Year Affordable Housing and Homelessness Prevention Strategy, a year ahead of schedule.
Last Thursday, the news was revealed during a press conference at the county's new Tiffin Street Supportive Housing Building in Barrie.
Officials said the goal of creating 2,685 affordable homes across the county between 2014 and 2024 has already been surpassed. As of December 2022, 2,755 affordable homes have been created. The county has invested almost $220 million since 2014.
"When I learned that the initial goal had not only been achieved but exceeded one year ahead of schedule, I was thrilled for those whom we serve across the region," said Warden Basil Clarke from the county.
The County of Simcoe has started preliminary work and consultation on their next ten-year strategy, expected to begin in 2024 through 2034.
The new strategy will include plans to create homes for low- and middle-income families and individuals. The consultation and planning phase will continue throughout 2023 before being presented to county council for input and approvals.
"It’s clear to me that a lot has changed in Simcoe County over the past 10 years," said Mina Fayez-Bahgat, General Manager of Social and Community Services, County of Simcoe. "And we have already started preliminary work and consultation on our next ten-year strategy, which will help even more residents in need across the region."
