News release - Simcoe County Rovers FC - Ryan Eakin
The Simcoe County Rovers had a successful last three games, highlighted by a pair of wins on Sunday.
The day began with the women’s team beating North Toronto Nitros 2-1 to improve to 4-0-0 in regular season play, good enough for first place in the League1 standings.
As has been the case all season long for the Rovers, it was their depth that stepped up in a big way, with Jessica Shears and Maddie Hill scoring the goals for the home side.
The goals were Shears’ and Hill’s first of the season.
Things went just as well for the men’s side, who beat Darby FC 3-0 to improve to 2-1-1 on the season.
The Rovers waited little time scoring the opening goal, as Shawn Claud-Lawson scored in the 11th minute before an own goal and a Jarred Phillips goal extended the lead to 3.
The men’s success continued into Wednesday when they beat the Unionville Milliken SC 3-0 for their second 3-0 win in a row.
Lawson continued his scoring way for the Rovers, scoring twice for the roadside before Reshon Phillip added to the lead in the 89th minute.
The win puts the Rovers 3-1-1 on the season, good enough for second place in the League1 standings.
Men’s head coach Jason Beckford has been impressed.
“I’m really pleased with the reaction from the players since the Alliance game. There’s a long way to go in the season, but the signs of the brand of soccer we want to play are positive.”
Up next for the men’s side is Vaughan Azzurri (3-0-1) on Sunday before returning home to face BVB IA Waterloo on Sunday, May 29th.
Next up for the women are a pair of road games, first this Sunday against Unionville Milliken SC (1-4-0) before heading to Mississauga to face North Mississauga FC (1-3-0) on Wednesday.
They then return home on Sunday, May 29 to face undefeated FC London.
