A Barrie police officer has been cleared by the province’s Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of any criminal wrongdoing in connection with serious injuries sustained by a woman after she jumped from a bedroom window last November.
This happened on Nov. 6, 2021, according to the SIU, when officers went to a housing complex on Georgian Drive for reports of a domestic disturbance. The SIU says as police entered the unit to check on the woman’s well-being, she jumped out her bedroom window upstairs. The woman was transported to the hospital, where she was diagnosed with a brain bleed as well as fractures to her pelvis and femur.
Initially, police had gone to the complex that day in relation to a fight involving three men. They left after it was determined the fight was unsubstantiated. When officers later returned to the Georgian Drive residence and began a search of the unit, the SIU said that is when the woman jumped out of the window. Her boyfriend, who had been hiding, was located. The SIU report said both had court-ordered conditions to not communicate with one another.
The SIU is called in anytime there is an interaction involving police and someone is seriously injured, dies or alleges sexual assault.
