SIU Clears Police Of Causing Injury To Newmarket Man Armed With Machete

Use of Force Justified in This Situation

The SIU has cleared police of any wrongdoing after a machete-wielding suspect was injured during his arrest.

York Regional Police were called to a Newmarket mall in August of last year, with reports of a man holding a machete there. The SIU says the man put down the knife only after being surrounded by officers who demanded he do so several times.

During the arrest, police say the suspect struggled during the arrest, causing a fracture to his shoulder.

The Special Investigations Unit says, despite the injury, the officers’ use of force was justified in this case.
