SIU finds no grounds to charge OPP officer in Huntsville arrest

Complainant suffered three broken ribs

Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has determined there are no reasonable grounds to lay criminal charges against an officer in relation to the July 2018 arrest of a man in Huntsville.

The man suffered three broken ribs during the process.

Police were called to a plaza on Main Street in Huntsville around noon on July 16, 2018. Citizens had reported an altercation between the complainant and another person. Believing that an assault had taken place, the officer moved in to make an arrest, during which a struggle. The suspect was eventually wrestled to the ground and handcuffed.

The SIU has ruled the arrest “was clearly lawful in view of the Complainant’s behaviour just prior to the officer’s arrival,” and the officer’s use of force “was commensurate with the level of the Complainant’s resistance.”
