York Regional Police say an officer-involved fatal shooting occurred when police responded to a call for a disturbance at an apartment around 10:15 p.m. Thursday on Crowder Boulevard in Newmarket.
Police said they received multiple calls from citizens about the sounds of screaming.
"Responding officers encountered an adult male suspect in the building’s stairwell, there was an
interaction and the suspect was shot. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene," YRP stated in a news release on Friday.
Police added that an adult female was transported to hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
The province's police watchdog has invoked its mandate.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said officers responded to the apartment regarding a domestic disturbance.
The SIU probes all incidents in which a police officer has been involved in a serious injury, death or sexual assault.
The agency said eight investigators will be looking into the shooting.
A post-mortem is scheduled for Saturday.
