Ontario's police watchdog says it is investigating the fatal shooting of a 26-year-old man in Orillia.

Around 2 p.m. Thursday, the Special Investigations Unit says Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to a call about a disturbance at a residence on Barrie Road.

"Officers located a man believed to have been involved in the area of Cochrane Street and Matchedash Street South," according to an SIU news release. "The man had an edged weapon. An officer was stabbed. The officer discharged his firearm. At some point, another officer discharged a conducted energy weapon. The man was taken to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The officer was taken to hospital with serious injuries."

An earlier news release from Orillia OPP said the officer was in stable condition.

Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. The post-mortem is scheduled for Friday.
