Global Affairs Canada says six Canadians were injured and one remains "unaccounted for" after a high-speed rail crash Wednesday in Spain.
Department spokesperson Thida Ith says Canadian officials are providing consular assistance and are in contact with local authorities to gather more information.
Spain experienced its second deadly high-speed rail accident this year when one train slammed into another that had stopped on the tracks, killing at least 68 people and injuring dozens.
The accident occurred just before 9 a.m. local time and rescue workers continued to search the wreckage for survivors and bodies.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed Canada's solidarity with victims and family members today and indicated Ottawa would help as needed.
Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said on social media he has reached out to his Spanish counterpart.
