Each year, the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board (SMCDSB) holds their annual Christmas Card Artwork Contest. Students in Kindergarten through Grade 12 submit hundreds of pieces that represent the true meaning of Christmas.
SMCDSB is excited to announce that this year’s winner is Maya Cavaco, a Grade 11 student from St. Peter’s Catholic Secondary School in Barrie. Her submission featured a beautifully painted manger scene in vibrant colours, with a Van Gogh-like style.
The winning submission is sent to more than 20,000 SMCDSB staff and families, as well as to other school boards across the province, and to dignitaries such as Cardinal Frances Leo, Premier Doug Ford, and Education Minister Paul Calandra. The winner is also recognized at the Board’s Celebrating Excellence event later this school year.

“The Christmas card artwork contest is always a highlight of the Christmas season at SMCDSB,” said Susan van Amelsvoort, Board Chair. “We are incredibly proud of all of the students who submitted their work, and we want to especially congratulate Maya, whose vibrant piece was a true standout.”
