Snowmobiler who went through the ice on Lake Simcoe Friday night in stable condition

The man spent about 40 minutes in the icy water

A snowmobiler who nearly drowned after his sled went through the ice on Lake Simcoe near Orillia is in stable condition.

The man was airlifted to a Toronto hospital Friday night in life-threatening condition.

Orillia OPP say the snowmobiler crashed through the ice shortly after 6:30 p.m. in the area of Line 15 South and Woodland Drive in Oro-Medonte. Provincial police were able to assist in directing firefighters to the scene where the man was pulled from the water and transported to shore suffering from severe hypothermia.

The man had been riding with a second snowmobiler when he entered the water. The other person tried to pull him to safety but was unable to, but hung on to the man for nearly 40 minutes waiting for help to arrive.
