Spike belt deployed, two people charged after driver flees from police in Wasaga Beach

On wheels and on foot, an attempt to escape the law in Wassaga Beach.

This started on Monday evening when Ontario Provincial Police received an ALPR (Automated Licence Plate Recognition) hit on a vehicle in the area of Mosley Street.

"Police attempted to stop the vehicle at which time the driver fled and failed to stop. Police attempted to stop the vehicle multiple times as the driver drove dangerously though the area," according to an OPP news release on Tuesday.

Police deployed a spike belt in an attempt to stop the driver. The driver fled on foot and was arrested after a brief foot pursuit. The passenger of the vehicle was also arrested and taken into custody.

The driver, a 30-year-old Brampton man, has been charged with the following:

·        Drive Motor Vehicle - Perform Stunt - Excessive Speed

·        CC 320.17 Flight from Peace Officer X 3

·        Dangerous Operation

·        Possession of a Schedule II Substance for the purpose of Trafficking

·        Possession of a Schedule IV substance for the Purpose of Trafficking

·        Failure to comply with release order - other than to attend court

·        Possession of over 30g dried cannabis in a public place

·        Possession of Illicit Cannabis

·        Possession for the Purpose of Distributing

He also received a 30-day drivers licence suspension and a 14-day vehicle impound.

The accused was held pending a bail hearing on Tuesday.

The passenger, a 20-year-old woman from Etobicoke, has been charged with:

·        Possession of a Schedule II Substance for the purpose of Trafficking

·        Possession of a Schedule IV substance for the Purpose of Trafficking

·        Possession of over 30g dried cannabis in a public place

·        Possession of Illicit Cannabis

·        Possession for the Purpose of Distributing

The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood in September 2023.

Police are requesting anyone who lives in the area of Antigua Drive and Lauderdale Blvd in Wasaga Beach to check any video surveillance they have and to also check their property for any evidence that may have been discarded.
