Ontario Provincial Police are investigating a suspicious incident overnight in Collingwood that ended with a stolen SUV ditched on Highway 26 after a spike belt was deployed to stop it.
Just before 1 a.m. on Wednesday, police were called to the Lockhart subdivision about a male checking out parked vehicles. Officers spotted this guy as he exited a 2023 Dodge Durango and inspected a vehicle with a flashlight before leaving the area.
Police saw the SUV on Stanley Street, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed.
Multiple OPP units from the Collingwood and Huronia West detachments engaged in coordinated patrols to locate the vehicle.
Then just before 1:30 a.m., officers located the SUV and deployed a spike belt on Highway 26 in the area of Culham Road near Edenvale, which deflated the vehicle's tires. The occupant(s) fled on foot, and despite a ground search with the help of the OPP K9 Unit and Emergency Response Team, no arrests have been made.
Police say the Durango was stolen from York Region.
Officers are canvassing the Collingwood area for video footage, including residential and commercial security systems and doorbell-style cameras.
