Santa's helper on Nov. 24 was South Simcoe Police Auxiliary Constable Balpreet Badial.
On duty for the parade that afternoon in Alcona, several members of the public ran to Badial to tell her they needed help.
"Badial was brought to a 4-year-old boy who was choking," SSP said in a media release. "She quickly took action when she noticed the child's airway was blocked, and he was not breathing."
Badial began life-saving efforts on the child and was able to dislodge the blockage, which turned out to be a piece of candy. When paramedics arrived, the youngster was assessed and found to be in good health.
"I was right where I was supposed to be," Badial said. "I am grateful to have been able to save the life of a child in need. I take great pride in serving the Innisfil and Bradford West Gwillimbury communities as a volunteer auxiliary constable for the South Simcoe Police Service. This family looked for me for help and as someone who could save their loved one. In these situations, every second counts."
The parade was Badial's second event since she completed her training and received her badge on Nov. 14.
South Simcoe Police auxiliary receives similar training as frontline officers.
"Auxiliary Constable Balpreet Badial's response exemplifies the spirit of service and professionalism that our auxiliary members bring to the community. This heroic act underscores the importance of having trained volunteers to respond and step in during emergencies. Her quick thinking and selfless actions have made a lasting impact on the family members involved," said Staff Sergeant Davie Phillips, community support and auxiliary unit.
