South Simcoe Police (SSP) conducted a six-month crackdown on uninsured drivers.

Between January and June, officers laid 276 charges against people who were driving without insurance or had invalid coverage. They also laid three charges against drivers who tried to fake it with false proof of insurance.

The minimum fine upon conviction is $5,000 for each offence under Ontario's Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act, according to a news release from SSP.

"Uninsured vehicles not only pose significant liability consequences for all motorists, but also place unnecessary risk to other road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists," the news release stated.
