When in Rome?
Starbucks is taking a page out of Italy's book and adding extra virgin olive oil to its coffee.
Today, the giant coffee chain unveils a new line of Olive oil infused beverages called "Oleato."
CEO Howard Schultz says he got the idea when visiting Milan last summer when he was introduced to the Mediterranean custom of taking a spoonful of EVOO daily, and soon began enjoying it in his coffee.
According to a statement, Schultz said, "I was absolutely stunned at the unique flavour and texture created when the Partanna extra virgin olive oil was infused into Starbucks coffee. In both hot and cold coffee beverages, what it produced was an unexpected, velvety, buttery flavor that enhanced the coffee and lingers beautifully on the palate."
Thus, Oleato was born.
Before you knock it, think about this: remember when adding coconut oil, clarified butter, and MCT oil to our coffee was all the rage? It was actually pretty dang delicious.
The Oleato beverages will only be available in Italy but will soon expand into North America.
