Provincial police say 420 charges were laid in May and June as part of an ongoing operation to crack down on stunt driving and illegal racing in the Greater Toronto Area.

The O-P-P says that included 35 criminal charges related to impaired driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, 20 for stunt driving and 105 for speeding.

Deputy Commissioner Rose DiMarco told a news conference that street races are extraordinarily brazen and elaborately orchestrated events that result in actions that threaten the safety of all participants.

She says provincial police laid nearly 53-hundred racing and stunt driving charges against drivers last year and the number of racing incidents on Ontario roads continues to climb.
