Barrie Author talks about conquering mountains and mental health

“Summits of Self: The Seven peaks of personal growth,” by Alan Mallory

Former Barrie resident Alan Mallory has combined his knowledge of the human mind and mountaineering to help people with personal challenges, anxiety, and depression.

In 2008, Mallory and his family climbed Mount Everest, a physical and mental journey that greatly impacted him.

In his book called “Summits of Self: The Seven peaks of personal growth,” Mallory uses mountaineering analogies to talk about the struggles people face.

He references the seven summits, comparing them to the challenging areas of our lives.

Each challenge is then followed by a practical journey to make lasting changes.

Mallory says he has personal experience with anxiety and depression.

“Just after high school, I developed Generalized Anxiety Disorder.”

” I had triggers that would stimulate my anxiety, but eventually, it’s the noticing of the anxiety that perpetuates the cycle.”

“Eventually, I started reading all the books I could about what I was going through, which led me to study the human mind. I began making minor changes throughout my life, and that’s what I’ve written in this book.”

Mallory’s journey eventually led him to earn a master’s degree in psychology.
