Sustainable underground fridge keeps food chilled naturally, no electricity needed

Not a lot of them in newer homes, but a lot of older homes still have a cold cellar – a place to keep packaged food, produce and preserves cool.

Now, there’s a sustainable underground fridge that will do the same. No electricity necessary.

The Groundfridge is dug into the ground and covered with a metre of soil which acts as insulation. It can hold up to 500 kilograms of food – enough to fill 20 conventional refrigerators.

Its makers say it can be easily dug up and moved if you change your place of residence.
