Terrorism charge laid against London attack suspect

The suspect in the truck attack that killed four family members in London, Ontario has been charged with terrorism. Police said the attack was targetted against Muslims.

The 20-year-old was already facing four counts of first-degree and one count of attempted murder. The new charges were announced by prosecutors on Monday. The attempted murder charge is also being prosecuted as terrorism.

A family of five was out for an evening stroll when a pickup truck mounted the curb and ran into them. The driver sped off and was nabbed at a mall about seven kilometres from the collision scene.

46-year-old Salman Afzaal, his 44-year-old wife Madiha Salman, their 15-year-old daughter Yumna Afzaal, and Salman’s 74-year-old mother Talat Afzaal were killed. The couple’s nine-year-old son, Fayez Salman, suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital.

A funeral for the Afzaal family was held on Saturday.
