News release - Barrie Police

Yesterday morning, just before 9:30 a.m., uniformed officers from the Barrie Police Service were assisted by members of the Service’s Tactical Support and Canine Units after police received information about a theft.

Responding officers were made aware that a resident of Dean Avenue had tracked a stolen wallet to a number of area businesses in the Big Bay Point Road and Yonge Street area.

The wallet was taken sometime overnight from an unlocked car and a number of fraudulent, but unsuccessful attempts to use credit cards were carried out.

Police set up containment after two male suspects fled and were last seen in the Lover’s Creek area.

The Barrie Police Canine Unit was deployed into the area and one suspect was initially located at 11:17 a.m. The track continued to a residence where the outstanding suspect was located just before noon.

Both males, a 30-year-old originally from Thunder Bay and a 32-year-old male from Winnipeg were transported back to Barrie Police Headquarters where the investigation continued.

Police have now been able to determine that these suspects primarily focused their attention on removing property and valuables from unlocked cars that were parked overnight in driveways and are following up on a number of occurrences that date back to mid-June.

The males are currently facing a number of theft, possession of stolen property and assault with a weapon charges that stem from yesterday’s incident, and are being held in custody for a Bail Hearing that is scheduled for Wednesday.

Barrie Police wish to acknowledge the information received from members of the public yesterday as these details were instrumental in the arrest of the two suspects.
