Ontario's police watchdog says a 44-year-old man suspected of murder allegedly shot at officers and killed police dog before he was shot by another Toronto officer.
The Special Investigations Unit says police responded to an apartment building in Etobicoke on Tuesday night in an attempt to locate and arrest a man for murder.
The SIU says the man allegedly fled the property, shot at officers and was later tracked down to a nearby backyard.
They say the man shot and killed a police service dog an officer shot the suspect.
One person was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
In a tweet, Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw identified the dog as Bingo.
Bingo, one of our K9s, was killed in the line of duty by gunfire tonight. Thank you for keeping our members safe and thank you for your service. My deepest condolences to his partner and to all of our @TPSK9 unit. pic.twitter.com/zQFOrMfIVS
