If you ever feel sad or annoyed when the sun is shining, you're not alone.
I often get the side eye from people when I say, " I enjoy gloomy, overcast days instead of sunny ones."
Now, thanks to TikTok, the feeling of shame when the sun peaks from behind the clouds has a term: "sun or sunshine guilt."
"Sunshine guilt is the regret you feel when ignoring a beautiful day and staying indoors.
Recently, creator @thereneereina posted about her tough day dealing with the extra rays of sunshine when she was to exhausted to leave the house.
"I feel this pressure to go for a walk and enjoy the weather while it lasts. I can't enjoy myself indoors now, because the whole time I'm thinking that I should be outside. So basically my day is ruined."
In an interview with Bustle, Dr. Nadia Teymoorian, a Moment of Clarity Mental Health Center psychologist, explained that "sunshine guilt" can intensify if the person assumes everyone else is outdoors enjoying their lives.
@thereneereina has received thousands of comments from people who feel the same as her, and it's nice to know I'm not the only one who channels my inner Wednesday Addams.
This quote from Winifred Sanderson has become my mantra.
Some of the comments on the video include:
"This is how I feel all spring and summer in MN. Everyone is so focused on enjoying every minute. I just want to read my book."
"Omg- I feel this deeply!! I didn't know there was a name for it! "
"This is why I moved to Alaska. I feel so much calmer and still enjoy outdoors when I want."
"This is why I've always loved winter and rainy days. They don't expect anything from me and that's peaceful."
"I feel like this is reverse SAD lmao I thrive when it's dark at 5pm."
